Databricks Genie: Conversational Analytics for the Enterprise
Databricks Genie makes it easier for business users to explore enterprise data by asking questions in plain English, without writing SQL. But getting accurate answers requires more than AI. Learn how Genie combines conversational analytics, semantic layers, and data governance to deliver reliable insights, how it compares to other BI tools, and what organizations should consider before getting started.
Natural language business intelligence lets anyone ask a data question in plain English and get an answer without writing SQL. A question might be “which pipeline segments ran under capacity last month?” The tool turns it into a database query, runs it, and usually returns a short written explanation with the chart. Microsoft, AWS, Google, and Databricks all ship this capability now, so fluent answers are easy to find. Correct answers are harder. On a 28-question internal benchmark Databricks published in June 2026, Genie answered 84.5% correctly on the first try. The strongest general-purpose coding agent scored 52.4%.
Two design choices explain most of that gap. The first is a semantic layer that knows what your business terms mean. The second is governance that follows each user’s identity. The benchmark is Databricks’ own, and a vendor-run test is no substitute for an independent audit. Treat it as a reason to run your own test before you commit budget.
Natural Language Business Intelligence: NLQ Asks, NLG Explains
Natural language business intelligence combines two techniques. Together they let a non-technical user work with data the way they’d ask a colleague. Natural language query (NLQ) handles the input. You type a question, and the system works out which data, measures and filters you mean.
Natural language generation (NLG) handles the output. It writes a plain-English summary of the result, such as “Comp sales fell in the Southwest, mostly at weekday lunch.” Good tools pair that narrative with a chart or table so the reader can check it.
Both are applications of natural language processing (NLP). NLP is the branch of AI that teaches software to read and write human language. ChatGPT is an NLP application too. The difference is the source of the answer. A BI assistant answers from your governed data. A general chatbot answers from what it learned in training.
The practical payoff is self-service analytics. A plant manager, a regional sales director or a franchise operator can get a number directly. Nobody files a ticket and waits for an analyst to write SQL.
Natural Language Queries Follow Five Steps, and Each Can Fail
Every natural language BI tool, from Genie to Power BI Copilot, runs roughly the same five-step chain. Each step is a place where an answer can go wrong.
Early NLQ features relied on keyword matching and classic machine learning. Current tools use generative AI, which copes far better with messy phrasing. It also writes plausible SQL that can be wrong in ways a business user won’t spot. Steps 2 and 4 matter more than the language model underneath.
Your Semantic Layer Decides Whether the Answers Are Right
A language model has no idea what “net revenue,” “active patient,” or “comp store” means at your company. Accuracy depends on the semantic layer far more than on the model. The semantic layer is the curated set of tables, joins, metric definitions and vocabulary. It sits between raw data and the people asking questions. In one restaurant group, comp sales excludes newly opened stores. In another, it doesn’t. The assistant only knows which rule applies if someone wrote it down.
Databricks builds this curation into the product. Genie Agents are domain-specific data environments. A data team sets up the tables, instructions and examples for one subject area. At its Data + AI Summit on June 16, 2026, Databricks also announced Genie Ontology. Like the rest of the Genie family, it is governed by Unity Catalog.
The vendor’s research points the same way. In May 2026, Databricks AI Research reported three techniques that lifted Genie’s accuracy on an internal benchmark.
They were specialized knowledge search, parallel thinking and a multi-LLM design. Measured relative to a leading coding agent, accuracy rose “from 32% to over 90%.”
For buyers, the best AI for data questions is the one grounded in your definitions, whatever model it runs on. That is the core case for data-centric artificial intelligence. Better curated data & analytics foundations mean less guesswork, and they improve answers more reliably than a bigger model does.
Genie Runs as the User, So Unity Catalog Rules Apply Automatically
Databricks Genie executes every query with the end user’s own credentials. As a result, Unity Catalog row filters, column masks and attribute-based access control apply without extra setup. Databricks says Genie is “incapable of returning a record the end-user is not authorized to see.”
Each control does a specific job. A row filter limits which records a person sees, so a franchise operator only gets their own stores. A column mask hides sensitive values, such as patient identifiers in a medtech sales dataset. Attribute-based access control (ABAC) applies policies from tags like region or data sensitivity, so one rule can cover hundreds of tables.
Unity Catalog is Databricks’ governance layer for data and AI assets. It sits at the center of the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform, which is why Genie can inherit its rules instead of keeping a separate permission model.
Ask every vendor whether its assistant queries as the signed-in user or through a shared service account. With a shared account, the assistant’s access decides what comes back, not the user’s. Also remember that Genie inherits gaps as faithfully as it inherits rules. If your Unity Catalog policies are incomplete, fix them before launch.
Natural Language BI Answers the Follow-Up Questions Dashboards Can’t
Natural language BI works best as a layer on top of dashboards and SQL. It picks up the ad hoc questions a fixed dashboard was never built to answer.
| Approach | Strength | Who It Serves | Main Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dashboards | Consistent, governed KPIs | Executives and operators | Answers only pre-built questions |
| Hand-written SQL | Precise and flexible | Analysts and engineers | Analyst queue and wait times |
| Natural language BI | Fast ad hoc follow-ups | Any business user | Only as good as the semantic layer |
In traditional BI, a reporting tool connects to the warehouse through ODBC or JDBC connections. Analysts model the data and publish dashboards. Every new question goes back into the queue. Natural language BI shortens that loop, so IT fields fewer one-off requests.
The formats are converging. Databricks now turns Genie on by default for published dashboards. A viewer can click “Ask Genie” and question the data behind a chart.
Genie, Power BI Copilot, Quick Sight and Looker Fit Different Stacks
The right tool is usually the one native to the platform where your governed data already lives. That is where the semantic layer and security rules sit.
| Tool | Natural language feature | Best fit | Watch item |
|---|---|---|---|
| Databricks Genie | Genie One, Genie Agents, Genie Code | Data governed in Unity Catalog | Fast-changing product names |
| Microsoft Power BI | Copilot | Microsoft Fabric users | Q&A retires February 2027 |
| Amazon Quick Sight | Amazon Q in Quick Sight | AWS-centric teams | Now part of Quick Suite |
| Google Looker | Conversational analytics | Google Cloud teams | Agent access through Looker MCP |
Databricks Genie
Genie fits organizations that already run on Databricks and govern data in Unity Catalog. Databricks describes a family: Genie One for business users, Genie Agents for domain-specific data and Genie Code for developers. Genie Agents were called Genie Spaces until a 2026 rename, so older documentation uses the old term.
AI/BI Genie is generally available on all clouds. In February 2026, Databricks reported a $1.4B revenue run-rate for its AI products. It said it would scale investments in Genie, which matters for a multi-year roadmap.
Power BI Copilot
For Microsoft Fabric shops, Copilot is now the natural language path. Microsoft first set Q&A’s deprecation for December 2026, calling Copilot “more advanced and integrated.” It has since extended the retirement to February 2027. After that, Q&A visuals will show an error.
Copilot now runs on every Fabric capacity from F2 up, where it once required P1 or F64. It sits within Microsoft Fabric’s broader set of AI data tools. Inventory your Q&A visuals now so their replacement fits a normal release cycle.
Amazon Quick Sight
AWS introduced QuickSight Q as a machine learning feature for natural language queries. Its generative AI successor, Amazon Q in QuickSight, became generally available on April 30, 2024.
In October 2025, AWS folded QuickSight into Amazon Quick Suite. The BI capabilities became Quick Sight, alongside Quick Research, Quick Flows, Quick Automate and Quick Index. Expect your evaluation to span the whole suite.
Google Looker
Looker is the Google Cloud option. Google says Looker was named a Leader in Gartner’s 2026 evaluation of analytics and BI platforms, for the third year running. Google also says PayPal scaled conversational analytics to more than 3,000 users through Looker MCP.
Early Genie Adopters Report Faster Queries and Broader Data Use
The clearest public results come from companies that pointed Genie at a defined domain. Premier Inc. says Genie generates complex SQL “as much as 10 times faster” than writing it by hand. Premier plans to scale Genie to as many as 20,000 users across hundreds of hospitals.
Databricks’ own marketing team used data in decisions 3x more often after adopting a Genie assistant.
In your industry, the questions look like these:
Each depends on a definition someone has to write. “Unplanned downtime,” “legacy line,” and “loyalty store” must exist in the semantic layer before the assistant can answer reliably.
Prove Accuracy on One Domain Before You Add More Users
A Genie rollout earns trust fastest when it starts with one narrow subject area that has a clear owner and clean definitions. Use this checklist before you widen access.
Measurable progress on one domain does more for adoption than a broad launch nobody trusts.
