Mobile Business Intelligence as a Catalyst for Change

Mobile business intelligence apps are one of the best ways to transition users away from traditional reporting mechanisms and truly add value to the business at the same time.

Previously, I laid out the reasons why so many organizations fail to move away from traditional BI reporting. However, it wasn’t all doom and gloom. The answer could simply be to incorporate enterprise mobility into your transition plan.

Your users have already evolved.

The first thing to understand is that your employees are already using mobile in its current state, in most cases. They are just using it inefficiently. That 300 page report that gets emailed to the regional vice president every day? She is pulling up that PDF on her phone or tablet already.

People are going to find a way to use their mobile devices in their jobs, so it makes sense to leverage this as the mechanism to transition users away from those traditional reports.

Mobile business intelligence trends and forecasts indicate that the market will continue to grow. BYOD policies at organizations are becoming more pervasive, and industries with field workers (think retail and hospitality regional managers) are certainly catalysts for this change.

Plug mobile in where it’s the smoothest fit.

Mobile is successful because it can be approached as enabling a current use case or process, just on another form factor. In fact, where I have seen it most successful is when the use case or process is already well established and so the change management, and subsequent adoption, are successful.

Starting with a single, well established process also mitigates the risk of implementation issues – especially if this is the first time an organization has delved into enterprise mobile applications.

Yes, there are several challenges that have to be considered… from the mobile device management strategy to mobile security and deployment. But, again, these can be overcome by starting small. For example, rolling out to just a small pilot audience or starting with a use case that only has a small set of users.

There are many other factors to consider on the implementation side and many lessons learned and best practices that I will discuss in future articles, but they can all be conquered with the right approach.

From ease of use and an engaging user experience, to real-time access to information from anywhere, it’s no mystery that mobile BI is being widely adopted in the enterprise.

It’s likely that your users are already employing mobile devices to get access to business information to make timely decisions. So, it makes perfect sense to empower them to use mobile devices in a more efficient manner to consume that information. Before you know it, no one will even remember that 300-page PDF grid report.
