Data & Analytics Case Study
Azure Implementation for a National Construction Company
Client
Our client is a national leader in commercial construction, providing lifecycle construction services for projects small, large, and everything in between. With over 1,600 employees in 14 offices across the United States, our client is dedicated to delivering unmatched construction services nationwide and boasts a vast portfolio that includes work for Fortune 500 companies.
Project Scope
The client came to Smartbridge with a problem that is probably relatable to a lot of companies: they wanted to build up their data & analytics program but didn’t know where to start. The company was primarily a one-man shop and were receiving information from custom Excel reports that were created out of data which was exported from their various systems. They wanted a platform that could provide this information and therefore needed a data repository such as a data warehouse. With a data warehouse, they could have data from different sources and tie them together to receive better value out of the information they had.
Smartbridge took this as an opportunity to help them from the ground up by implementing Azure. This would give them a central data repository that they can leverage for better insights which in turn helps them make better decisions to run their business.
Other Key Business Challenges
There were a few other challenges the business faced that also contributed to the project requirements.
Business Challenge 1: Unifying the data sourcesThe client had many different systems throughout the business such as JD Edwards, Procore (a construction management software), their CRM, a safety software, etc. Each of these were used to provide different information about a project, but there was not a singular place to access this data. The end user would need to log into each software and compile the information for the project they needed.
Business Challenge 2: Creating a financial dashboardThe business needed to provide key stakeholders with valuable financial information such as revenue, profits, costs, etc. They needed a dashboard that could provide high-level information, but also have the ability to drill-down to specific customers and industries.
Smartbridge Project Challenge
Challenge: Connecting data from construction software to manage construction activity.A challenge the team faced during the project was connecting the data from the client’s construction software, Procore. The data had to be put through an API, however, there were 70 different endpoints (places where the data was coming through) and the structure for each of them was different.
Solution: The Smartbridge team figured out what the structures were, predefined them, and used a configuration to assign how the data is fed. The benefit to this is that it’s a dynamic solution and you don’t need a developer, providing the client with more of a plug and play solution that can help them in the long run.
The Solution Delivered
Smartbridge defined the data foundation/architecture for our client in Azure. The team then deployed services in Azure to support their data journey and help them with consuming data from multiple sources and systems throughout their business. This included creating KPI-driven dashboards using Power BI where stakeholders were able to see summary information and drill-down to data that was specific to them.
Technology Used:
Success Through a Modernized Implementation
Thanks to the Smartbridge team, the client now has one location where all their data is easily accessible and the business is able to build meaningful dashboards and gather valuable insights to optimize their operations.
