Basics of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Grower Management for Agribusiness

The Agribusiness industry contends with a unique set of challenges integrating farm operations into core business systems. JD Edwards EnterpriseOne has developed Grower Management to support the fluid yet cyclical nature of the agriculture, processing and distribution business.

A customer of Smartbridge is a very large Agribusiness company, and they are looking at improving their harvest by refining their growing process to include repeatable successful techniques. This includes managing the new acquisitions in the Oracle JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Grower Management Module.

Our customer is aggressively acquiring farms across the company and the need exists to seamlessly integrate them into the current system to administer the farm operations.

Add a New Farm in the Grower Management System

The below section covers the basics of integrating the farms into the existing system by creating new companies and the required entities to help with the sales transfer from one company to another.

For Example, Farm (A) under company (X) produces the product and will do the sourcing to the Store (B) under company (Y), then the store can make the sale of the product to the final customer.

To add a new Farm and Field/Block to the Grower module, make sure it is activated and the foundation setup is in place (Ex:  Address Book records for growers, grower representatives, owners, and suppliers). Navigate to the program (P99410) to verify that data items SY40G (Grower Management) are active.

In JD Edwards (JDE) Grower Management, a farm is defined as an entity providing crop harvest, for example, grass or fruits, to a purchasing entity. To add a new Farm, you must navigate to the program (P40G01) and click the button, “Add Farm”. See the below screen for reference.

There are mandatory fields required to create a new Farm. For example, Farm Code/ Name and the Branch/Plant related to the new farm. Also, you can add the farm’s legal owner and manage the status between active and inactive.

Add a Field or Block

The next step is to add a Field/Block. It represents a parcel of land and is typically defined with physical boundaries and characteristics, such as the crop grown on the block.

For example, a grower may grow crops on a farm of 100 different parcels of land. To add a Block – navigate to the program (P40G02) and click the “Add Block” button, enter the Farm Code and Name previously created. Also complete the survey area, planned estimate, and supplier number, which are mandatory fields.

Add Harvest Period to a Block

One key piece of data that you may enter for the block is the harvest period pattern. The harvest pattern defines the typical growing cycle for a given piece of land or block. To add Harvest Period Pattern – navigate to the program (P40G02) and enter the Field/Block code and the Crop Year plus all the mandatory fields. See the below screen as an example.

But that’s not all…

There are more steps involved in creating a Farm in the JDE Grower Management system, and the setup will change depending on the business requirements. Other setup configurations include geographic areas, grower cost centers, materials, varieties, etc.

As you can see by this business process flow provided by Oracle, we’ve only begun to capitalize on what Grower Management is capable of!
