Real Estate Firm Updates System Used Around the World

The Client

The Client is a privately owned, international real estate firm that has a presence in more than 100 cities around the globe and investor relationships with many of the world’s largest financial institutions. The company has a rich history of 50 years of operation and operates in 17 countries.

Business Need

The Client is standardized on Oracle JD Edwards EnterpriseOne (EnterpriseOne) 8.11 platform to manage properties across the world. Due to the support timelines released by Oracle, Client’s IT leadership launched an initiative to assess the feasibility of performing an upgrade in 2010. Smartbridge was selected to perform this assessment and the upgrade.

The Smartbridge Solution

Smartbridge, using its upgrade assessment methodology, worked closely with Client’s IT leadership to perform an assessment of the Client’s technical and functional environment, people, and organization constraints to create a comprehensive JDE upgrade plan. It included scope, timeline, milestones, cost, resource and risk management. Based on the results of our assessment, management launched the upgrade execution effort led by Smartbridge professionals.

Working closely with the business analysts, business users and technical personnel, Smartbridge upgraded the JDE EnterpriseOne system from 8.11 to 9.00 update 1. We retrofitted the custom applications and reports, tested the entire system end-to-end, performed two rounds fo mock conversions and successfully upgraded the system.

Results

The upgrade was executed with minimal impact to the users (weekend only). Minor issues were encountered post go-live due to Oracle software bugs that were not detected during testing. These were subsequently resolved by working closely with Oracle. The system has been very stable since the upgrade in 4Q 2010.

Food Distributor Upgrades a Highly Customized System

The Client

This Client is the world’s largest distributor of products to the world’s largest restaurant company. Headquartered in USA, their scope is worldwide. Over 3,900 employees in 30 distribution centers in 6 countries, 8,400 restaurants around the globe count on this Client for everything they need – from beef, to fries, to operating supplies. And because they’re focused only on the world’s largest restaurant company, they deliver, every day.

Business Need

The Client implemented Oracle JD Edwards EnterpriseOne (EnterpriseOne) Xe in 2000 to manage operations of the 15 distribution centers in the U.S. serving over 4,000 restaurants. The Sales and Procurement modules of the system have been heavily customized to meet the business needs of the company, making an upgrade a challenging exercise.

Because of the support timelines released by Oracle, the Client’s IT leadership launched a project to execute an upgrade to the 9.00 platform. Due to major challenges they experienced during their upgrade effort which had a potential impact on successful rollout, Smartbridge was asked to jump in and bring the project from Red to Green.

The Smartbridge Solution

Using our structured upgrade processes, Smartbridge took on the technology architecture, infrastructure, implementation and go-live responsibilities. We enabled the client to meet their planned go-live milestones, rolled out the system to all the distribution centers in a smooth manner and provide post go-live ongoing support.

Results

Client successfully deployed the system using a big-bang approach to all US distribution centers in a smooth manner. The system has been very stable since the upgrade in 2Q 2010.

Smartbridge has recently completed a 9.0 implementation for the company’s Canadian operations (6 locations) on time and under budget.

Quick Upgrade for Company in Oil & Gas

The Client

This Client is a global supplier of oilfield metals, services and solutions to oil and gas manufacturers and service companies based in Houston. With offices in US, Singapore and Dubai, Client is quickly becoming a global players in specialty metals.

Business Need

The Client is standardized on Oracle JD Edwards EnterpriseOne (EnterpriseOne) 8.11 platform to manage operations across the world. Due to the support timelines released by Oracle, Client’s IT leadership launched an initiative to upgrade the JDE system to 9.00 in the first half of 2011. Smartbridge was selected to assist Client with the execution of this upgrade.

Upgrade Strategy and Plan

Smartbridge, using its upgrade assessment and execution methodology based on industry best practices worked closely with Client’s IT leadership to perform a technical upgrade of the system from 8.11 to 9.00 update 1.

Working closely with the business analysts, business users and technical personnel, Smartbridge upgraded the JDE EnterpriseOne system within 14 weeks. We retrofitted the custom applications and reports, tested the entire system end-to-end, performed 2 rounds of mock conversions and successfully upgraded the system.

Results

The upgrade was executed with minimal impact to the users (weekend only). Due to the international operations, the upgrade was planned to and executed carefully to cause as little intrusion as possible. BI Publisher reports were migrated. Minor issues were encountered post go-live and were quickly resolved. The system has been very stable since the upgrade in 4Q 2010.

Quick Service Restaurant Upgrades from EnterpriseOne 8.0

The Client

This Client is a privately held, Texas based fast food restaurant specializing in hamburgers. The Client operates over 700 restaurants across 10 states in the U.S.

Business Need

The Client implemented Oracle JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 8.0 in 2004 to manage operations of the company. Smartbridge assisted the Client with this implementation and has been supporting the company’s technology since then.

The key modules we implemented and are in use by the users are – Finance, Sales, Procurement, HR/Payroll, Fixed Assets and Property Management. The support timelines released by Oracle pushed the Client’s IT leadership to launch a project to execute an upgrade to 9.00 platform. The Smartbridge technology team was chosen to perform the technical upgrade of the JDE system to 9.00.

Upgrade Strategy and Plan

Using our structured upgrade processes and our familiarity with the system due to our role in implementing and supporting the system, Smartbridge successfully retrofitted all of the custom code built to support the operations, interfaces and 3rd party software solutions to enable continued operation of the business processes.

Smartbridge’s BI Publisher specialist converted over 15 special forms from FormScape to BI Publisher. Smartbridge’s technology architect analyzed the performance issues observed and provided recommendations which dramatically increased system performance. Smartbridge is currently involved in the end-to-end testing of the system with the business analysts and functional users.

Results

The Client completed the technical JDE upgrade on time and on budget. This upgrade initiative provided several benefits to the client:

  • Significant improvements in overall system performance – Payroll processing of checks used to take over 8 hours, now check are processed and printed in 4 hours.
  • Updated technology – The servers, databases, and related software were updated, extending their lifecycle, and improving security.
  • Software consolidation and cost reduction through replacement of Formscape with built-in BI Publisher.
  • Better positioned to take advantage of JDE 9.0 new functionality and enhancements to improve business processes.
