A Mobilized Treatment Plan for a Hospital ER Admission Process
A healthcare specialty consulting company that works closely with hospitals and physicians to optimize, improve and streamline patient management processes.
Patients visit emergency rooms (ER) at hospitals are various times of the day for various ailments, not all of which require a patient admission into the hospital. In this era of high medical treatment costs and high rates of litigation, doctors and nurses working in the ER must follow a standardized decision process based on key observation criteria. This helps them determine if the patient must be treated as an Inpatient or Outpatient so as to provide consistent care to the ER patients.
These standard processes are usually on printed documents that may not be readily accessible at all times.
In partnership with industry specialist consultants, Smartbridge developed an iPhone-based application that enables doctors and nurses to quickly and accurately review the various vital signs that must be observed, and determine whether the patient should be treated as an Inpatient or Outpatient based on these observations. The factors that were taken into account to make the Inpatient vs. Outpatient recommendation are:
- Patient referral source and diagnosis
- Referring Physician/AHP evaluation
- Risk Assessment diagnosis – Chest pain, Syncope, Myocardial Infraction, Cerebral Vascular accident, SIRS/Sepsis, GI, COPD, TIA, CAP, Pulmonary
The application finally suggests a treatment plan based on key observations and provides the suggested Inpatient/Outpatient treatment plan.
The iPhone application is being piloted in hospitals. Based on the results, the hospitals will determine the next steps for widespread rollout.
